Spring Has Sprung In Atlantic Canada
By Bruce Rathbun, CSSA Atlantic Canada Chapter Chairman
Last year was an eventful year with several seminars and the Clean Atlantic 2007 trade show topping the event list. Photographs from the very successful show can be seen on page 11 of this issue of Clean Atlantic. The next Clean Atlantic trade event is scheduled for 2009 in Moncton, NB.
The Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Sanitation Supply Association (CSSA) is well into its schedule of planned activities for 2008. On Feb. 7 a luncheon meeting was held in Dartmouth, NS, with David Amirault as the guest speaker. Amirault, an economist with the Bank of Canada, provided excellent insight into the state of the economy and economic prospects for the future. The session provided attendees a good sense of global and national market forces, but focused primary on the regional perspective. The feedback from those that attended was overwhelmingly positive which has lead to a similar sessions being planned for Moncton, NB, on May 6 and St. John’s, Nfld., on May 26. The event is open to CSSA members and their guests. For more information, and to book a spot, contact me at
A new initiative for Atlantic Chapter of the CSSA is the creation of an Environment Day. At a point in time when our natural environment is stressed by human activity and many companies in our industry are “going green,” our local chapter has decided to do something to further the cause.
The selected activity is the Cheverie Crossway Salt Marsh Project. Over 70 per cent of tidal marshlands in the Maritimes have been lost due to dyke building and road construction. The diminished habitat threatens many species. The marsh area in Cheverie has been restored by dramatically increasing the size of the culvert beneath the roadway allowing the flow of tidal waters. A local group was formed with the intention of constructing walking trials and an interpretive centre adjacent to the marsh to raise awareness of this valuable habitat and to educate people as to how marshlands work as the “kidneys of the land.”
CSSA members, their employees and families will be assisting in the building of trails and an observation deck. The event will be held on Sat. Jul. 19 (rain date – Sun. Jul. 20). After the work session is complete, there will be a barbecue for the participants. For additional information or to find out how you can assist, contact either my self at or Marc Costandi at . Donations would be accepted and appreciated.

May your summer be time shared with family and friends.

Best regards,
Bruce Rathbun
