Industry Luncheon A Hit With Delegates
By D. Capotosto, MCAT President, Gimco Ltd.

MCA Toronto Members, Associate Members and Industry Partners gathered at the Crystal Fountain Banquet Hall on Jan. 16, 2008, for the annual Industry Luncheon.

The well-attended event commenced with a networking reception followed by lunch and entertainment provided by Mr. Simon B. Cotter. After achieving success as a real estate executive, Cotter set his sights on a new profession – comedy. Winner of “Canada’s Comedian of the Year” award, he was a surprise hit with the audience. A natural storyteller, Cotter delighted delegates with his razor-sharp wit and unique perception of life’s day-to-day occurrences and absurdities. During the reception, attendees had a chance to chat with friends and associates about the activities of 2007, and plan for a busy year ahead.

MCA Toronto’s Educational Programs continue to blossom as we proceed with an eight-day Project Management Course conducted by ACCUBID. We are striving to provide knowledgeable Foremen, Estimators and Project Managers for the booming economy. Additionally, in November, we saw four more individuals from member contractor companies graduate from the Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI) at Babson College is Wellesley, MA. This brings our total to 10 ALI graduates in the past three years.

In early February MCA Toronto representatives met with Local 46, Local 30 and TSM to review our industry concerns. We will be arranging future meetings with TSM and Local 30 in the Spring to continue open dialogue and work towards strengthening the relationship between the two contractor association as well as our partners at the Local Unions.

As the Greater Toronto Area continues to blossom, we have set our sights on a goal of participating in as many educational forums as possible to provide our membership with every opportunity to remain current with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and Green building philosophy.

In the next few months, MCA Toronto will be represented at the MCA America Annual General Meeting in Palm Springs, as well as the MCA Ontario Annual General Meeting in Vilamoura, Portugal. The representation in provincial, national and international meetings can only be a benefit to all involved as we remain informed on industry trends unfolding in other regions.

MCA Toronto is pleased to be welcoming the Canadian Mechanical Contractors Education Foundation (CMCEF) Middle Management Conference to Toronto. The event will be held Mar. 27 to 29 at the Le Meridian King Edward Hotel. We will be hosting a welcome reception on Thurs. Mar. 27 to kick-off the event.

I am looking forward to a busy year in construction and the continuation of a strong economy. I hope to meet many of you at future MCA Toronto events.
