In 1967, Donald A. White, Huntington Laboratories of Canada Ltd., had the honour of drafting the association’s first national constitution. New Restroom Fixtures Have Many Benefits
Driven by growing concerns about germs and bacteria, increasingly facilities cleaned by building service contractors (BSCs) have installed automatic, no-touch, low-flow or no-flow fixtures, including faucets, toilets, urinals, and soap and paper towel dispensers. The Canadian Sanitation Supply Association (CSSA) Annual Awards Dinner was held on May 1, 2007 at the Holiday Inn on King, Toronto.  During the event, the Board of Directors recognized members who have contributed significantly to the association in the past year. In addition, the Sam Tughan Achievement Award was posthumously presented to Mike McCabe, a former CSSA president and avid supporter of the industry in Canada. Read more...

Clean Atlantic
On Thurs. Sep. 27, 2007, the Canadian Sanitation Supply Association will hold the largest trade show for the cleaning and maintenance industry in Atlantic Canada.
Clean Atlantic 2007, will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax, NS. Attendees will include facility service providers, building service contractors, building owners, carpet and upholstery cleaners, executive housekeepers, food service and hospitality, and other uses of sanitary supplies, equipment and services. Green Paper Products

However, they should not forget about the impact that the paper products they provide for their customers and use in cleaning has on our planet.  Purchasing Practices are Forcing Contractor Changes
We have seen a significant number of national procurement contracts for janitorial services in Canada in the past few years, particularly in the public sector market. Price is always important, but has not been the major component of the decision in the private sector where much of the purchase decision is based on the proposal itself and the value it brings in areas such as quality programs, management and training. The public sector has also gone into national or regional contractors, and most of these are driven by a desire for quality first and price second. The very nature of some of these contracts, however, makes prices the deciding factor when everything else looks acceptable. The cleaning business is often sold on presentation as it is an intangible making the decision tougher for the purchaser.  Read more...

ISSA Announces Charter Group of CIMS Assessors
ISSA has announced the first group to achieve accreditation as official ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) assessors. The 10 individuals who have been accredited will conduct comprehensive assessments of those cleaning organizations that have applied for certification under CIMS – a new standard developed through industry consensus to determine the universally accepted principles of a well-managed and customer-centred cleaning organization. An Era of Consequences
In 1938 Winston Churchill was growing inpatient with the British political system and the course of discussions with Nazi Germany.
If an effort to warn the British people of the impending danger of the Nazi’s, Churchill states this famous quote: “The era of procrastination of half measures of soothing and baffling expedients is over and is being replaced with an era of consequences.”
When I tour healthcare facilities, and observe some of the practices and standards, I cannot forget these words of warning made so long ago by Churchill. Environmental services in many organizations is still being treated as just an inconvenient expense by many senior administrators. Read more...

Clarke Joins Green Seal Advisory Committee
Carke has recently joined the Green Seal advisory committee and will be taking an active role as a stakeholder serving as a source of technical knowledge to Green Seal’s standard development team, as well as ultimately providing a critical and thoughtful review of the standards. The goal of the committee is to set a revised standard for industrial and institutional cleaners which will continue to represent a leadership standard recognizing the most beneficial environmental health characteristics of cleaning products in the current and emerging market.
