ON THE COVER: Resolve to Eliminate Pests in 2007 Pest Management Checklist for the New Year
By ZIA SIDDIQI, Ph.D., B.C.E., Quality Assurance Director, Orkin Canada
While you’re thinking of ways to improve maintenance in your facility in the New Year, put pest management high on the priority list. As you make New Year’s resolutions for 2007, now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your pest management strategy and get on the right track for a pest-free year.Your facility can offer everything that pests like rodents, stored-product pests and cockroaches seek: food, shelter and water. Besides the fact that pests can contaminate products and damage property, a sighting by a health inspector or by a customer can result in negative publicity and even closing the facility. To protect your reputation and your bottom line, work with a pest management professional to guard your establishment against pests. Follow the 2007 Pest Management Checklist to get the New Year off to a great start. Read more...
Carpet Maintenance Program
By STEVE WILLIAMS
Often, during the winter months, building service contractors (BSCs) and carpet cleaning professionals find that customers’ interest in carpet cleaning essentially evaporates. However, for a commercial facility, postponing carpet cleaning due to adverse weather conditions may make carpets more difficult to clean when spring arrives – increasing carpet cleaning costs and risking harm to the indoor environmental quality of the facility. Micheal Joseph McCabe
Micheal Joseph McCabe passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, 2006, surrounded by his family at the age of 62. Mike will be sadly missed by relatives and friends and the many business acquaintances he made over 40 years. He always had time to offer advice to anyone asking. Mike will always be remembered by many who had an opportunity to play golf with him. Standing over the ball with a cigar hanging out of his mouth ready to club the ball with a seven wood. It didn’t matter what hole or how far, it was always a seven wood. He might not have been the best golfer in the world but never was there a better man. Read more...

A Test to Learn From
Teachers tell us when we are kids that the purpose of a test is not to measure how much we know – or don’t know – but rather to help us learn. Although some of us may have disagreed, the goal of testing is indeed to improve and expand our knowledge regarding various subjects.
With this in mind, I would like to invite our readers to take a few minutes and complete the following Green cleaning quiz. And, as with all tests, it is not to determine what you know or don’t know, but rather to help you become better educated and aware of the number one trend in the cleaning industry today: the use of environmentally preferable cleaning products and systems. And, to further enhance the quiz’s education, the correct answers are shown with a brief explanation of each. Read more...
Quality Audits: The Tool of the Future
Although inspection programs have been around for years and are the report card for a housekeeping program’s performance, we are now seeing increasing importance being placed on quality audits and how they are performed.
In addition, we are seeing an increasing demand in our business for quality audits as an independent third party. The cost of a third party is lower than in-house inspectors plus the auditing firm is not subject to the same pressures from the cleaning contractor and their own peers within the premises. Green Seal has begun the process of conducting a comprehensive review and revision of GS-37, its environmental standard for institutional and industrial cleaning products. The scope of products covered by GS-37 include I & I general purpose, bathroom, glass and carpet cleaners.
The process of revising GS-37 is expected to take about one year and will include a formal public review of the proposed revisions about half-way through the process.
Green Seal has decided to revisit GS-37 with an eye toward “ramping up” its environmental, and safety and health criteria largely because of issues that have arisen in the context of new York State’s adoption of GS-37 for schools in 2006.
