FOLLANSBEE ROOF TOPS NEWEST BUILDING AT
FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY IN STEUBENVILLE, OHIO
Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH,
with a faith-based education tradition that has withstood the test of time, has
built its campus with the same commitment to strength and integrity.
Follansbee TCS II® Terne Coated stainless
steel roofs top the newly-expanded J.C. Williams Center and four other
buildings on campus, all designed by MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni (MCF
Architects) and inspired by the small Italian hometown of St. Francis of
Assisi, the university’s patron saint. Other buildings with Follansbee roofs
include the Kolbe/Clare Residence Halls, Finnegan Field House, and the Saints
Cosmas and Damian Science Hall.
“MCF Architects recognizes the superior durability
of the Follansbee TCS II product and its ability to stand up to UV light, hot
and cold extremes, and any potential corrosives that could affect other types
of roofing systems,” said Project Manager Ben Wetmore of MCF Architects. “We
specified a stainless roof for the J.C. Williams Center because we wanted to
ensure that it was maintenance-free for many years to come, and aesthetically,
because it was appropriate for our design approach. We know that Follansbee
provides the best stainless steel roofing system in the business and we are
pleased to use TCS II at Franciscan University.”
“The continued repeat specification of TCS
II on the campus speaks to the architect’s and university’s commitment to the
use of sustainable building materials, said Vice President and General Manager
of Follansbee, Edward Thomas. “TCS II offers corrosion resistance and longevity
that far surpass other building materials. TCS II also provides a unifying and
class look for the campus.”
Affectionately nicknamed the “living room”
of campus, the J.C. Williams Center is the hub of student life, with numerous
lounges, student mailboxes, a bookstore and café. The facility was renovated
and expanded to accommodate an 82 per cent growth in student population since
the original facility was built in 1971. The expansion, totalling 11,236 sq.
feet, added meeting rooms, student study areas, enlarged restrooms, a new
elevator, central staircase and mezzanine.
With an airy 45-foot-high atrium and bright
floor-to-ceiling windows, the J.C. Williams Center can now accommodate
concerts, dances and other cultural events. Officials of the college hope that
the space can be a place where students gather and relax, and where visitors
and newcomers can come for information.
“One of the design challenges for this
project was to create an addition to an existing building that looked and felt
entirely ‘new’,” said Wetmore. “Because this is the university’s student
centre, it need to be a welcoming place, one where (individuals) can see and be
seen. A destination where students and faculty can socialize, study and meet.
Visually, it needed to be both in context with the other buildings on campus
yet distinctive so that it would draw people to it.”
TCS II is an architectural stainless steel
coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) alloy. As a result of
Follansbee’s extensive metallurgic research, TCS II does not require painting,
is designed to weather naturally to an attractive gray patina, and can
withstand severe corrosive conditions including industrial, coastal and
salt-water environments. Follansbee offers nine pre-formed profiles for metal
roofing, including six standing seam profiles, but the highly versatile TCS II
can be tailored into a variety of design forms, from the traditional standing
seam roof to a vertical wall, barrel applications, shingles and customized
sections in flat or spherical shapes. TCS II is solderable and virtually
maintenance-free.
