Dominion Equipment and Chemical - 50th Anniversary

Image 50th Anniversary
In 1917, Peter Buzek, great grandfather of Vice-President Shannon Buzek, founded Dominion Window Cleaner in Brantford, Ontario.  “Back then floor maintenance was not an issue as it is today since the cement floors were usually just swept”, says Shannon.
Image After WWII, the linoleum floor was introduced and thus begun the revolutionization of the cleaning industry.  Around this time period, two companies, Advance and Johnstons Wax were offering distinctly different products to go hand in hand with this new linoleum floor.  Advance offered the first scrubber of its kind to clean it and Johnsons introduced wax products to protect it.
From talks between Dominion Window Cleaner and Advance and Johnsons Wax, Dominion Window and Floor Services was born in 1956.  At this time with Mike Buzek, grandfather of Shannon, in charge of the business, expanded to include contract cleaning from coast to coast.
In order to continue its growth DomClean was incorporated in 1971 resulting in two divisions, contract cleaning through DomClean and equipment distribution through Dominion Equipment and Chemical.
In the 70’s, Dominion Equipment and Chemical expanded its sales and distribution centre by setting up an office in Kitchener and in the 80’s a similar type of facility was set up in London, Ontario.
In order to strengthen its resolve and customer orientation, DomClean and Dominion Equipment and Chemical have had its management systems ISO 9001:2000 registered back in 1999.
ISO registration has provided DomClean with the motivation to reassess many of its offerings including customer service, repair department and health and safety aspects.  This in turn has provided DomClean’s customer’s with positive improvements in their overall service levels.
Image Dominion Equipment and Chemical is a triple AAA certified Advance dealer and offers a fleet of repair trucks to service its clients.  “On our rounds, we will even service the local customers if an emergency call comes in”, says Peter Hickey, service manager.
Dominion Equipment and Chemical caters towards School Boards, Hospitals and Industrial customers.  “Our showroom even allows walk-in customers to pick up what they require at a moments notice”, says Shannon.
Dominion Equipment and Chemical has worked with some of the best known manufacturer’s in the world today.  From Johnsons Diverses for cleaning chemicals and floorcare, Nilfisk-Advance for cleaning equipment, Scott Paper Limited for paper products, 3M for chemicals and floor pads, Enviro Solutions for “green” chemicals, W. Ralston for garbage bags, and Deb for hand soaps and hand care.
Our philosophy is too stick with the major vendors” says Shannon.
Image Dominion Equipment and Chemical also carries the traditional sanitary products such as mops, buckets and toiletries to fulfill clients’ total needs.  Shannon notes that as an extra service to their customers, “we even carry distilled water for maintenance of machine batteries.  In this way customers can make sure it is ordered and not overlooked.”
Another innovative service Dominion offers its customers is customized online ordering.  This system allows specific vendors to order in a controlled environment and within budget.  Customers can see a picture and detailed description of the item making ordering fast, simple and reliable.  From a health and safety standpoint MSDS are also available online so that customers have quick access to these important documents.
Dominion Equipment and Chemical has implemented two innovative procedures confirming its commitment to their staff and customers alike.  The Management Review Committee meets once a month to review customer concerns and to develop effective resolutions.  The Continuous Improvement Log encourages staff to give suggestions and make requests on improving the current working conditions and operation.

By involving our customers and our staff in the consultation process, Dominion looks forward to another 50 years servicing the community and offering, “Your Single Source for Sanitation Supplies”.
