A Closer Look At Hand Soap
Most astute building service contractors (BSCs) are well aware of the impact Green cleaning, the use of environmentally preferable cleaning products, and Green certification programs are having on the jansan industry. More and more customers are demanding that these products be used to clean and maintain their facilities, and jansan manufacturers are rushing both to develop these products and have them Green certified.
However, it should be clear that Green cleaning applies to much more than cleaning chemicals alone. It also includes the vacuum cleaners used every day in millions of facilities throughout North America, as well as floor machines, matting systems, mops and mop heads, cleaning cloths, and a host of other jansan products.  Read more...

You take a deep breath as Alex reads the question: “What does the plaque on your teeth, the slippery slime on river stones, the gel-like film on the inside of a flower vase, the unsightly stains in toilet bowls, the gunk that clogs your drains, otitis media (ear infections) and bacterial endocarditis (infection of the inner surface of the heart) have in common?”  Read more...

Due Diligence Your Best Defense
In the past 24 months significant changes in Health and Safety law and enforcement policies have been enacted by both the Provincial and Federal governments. The new law now makes it a criminal offense under the criminal code of Canada for health and safety violations. It cuts through the complexity of today’s organizational structures. This law makes everyone, including senior officers / board members, accountable.  Read more...

RESEARCH INSTITUTE TAKES POSITION ON GREEN CLEANING
The Board of Directors of the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) has issued a formal policy on the important area of green cleaning.
“We commend the advocates of green cleaning for what they have done for our industry,” said Jim Harris, CIRI chairman of the Board. “However, we are concerned that there are times when decisions are made to go ‘green’ that can have an impact on the actual cleaning process, resulting in a less healthy environment. The goal of CIRI is to place cleaning practices on a solid scientific basis, and then work with organizations like Green Seal or Design for the Environment to ensure that the green practices they recommend continue to provide effective cleaning and sanitization.”  Read more...

Why Workloading?
We all know of people who can walk into a facility and very quickly determine how many hours they feel the building will take to clean. In most cases, these people have years of experience and are able to compare similar areas or buildings with what they have seen in the past. Dividing by a magic number will then give you a correct number, some of the time. Unfortunately, it will also be wrong some of the time and, in both cases, you have a problem.
The main problem with the magic number method is that it becomes impossible to discuss how you arrived at the final figure with a potential customer and/or client, let alone with your own people. Perhaps most important, you are not sure whether you have guessed right or wrong, until you get the job. That’s not the time to find out you are wrong.  Read more...

BETTER HYGIENE, NO ODOR
The Yukon® No-Flush™ urinal from Waterless Co. LLC is said to help eliminate restroom odors.

The Yukon uses no water and has a vertical trap design, preventing odors from escaping. Urine passes through the trap, forming a barrier. This helps keep restrooms clean and smelling fresh.  Read more...
